Campaign and Communication Intern.

1 day (7h)/week; hours flexible; 4-6 months contract

DSN-UK is a small human rights organization that brings together organisations and individuals in the UK who are concerned with caste-based discrimination and aims to link grassroots priorities with international mechanisms and institutions to make an effective contribution to the liberation of those affected by caste discrimination.

Our membership includes concerned individuals, development agencies, trade unions, journalists and
academics. DSN-UK has one full time staff member, the Director, and is based within the host offices of Anti-Slavery International in London.

Our aims are to change values and practices through policy changes worldwide. Our goals are to raise awareness through education and to empower Dalit communities in Asia and the UK and support their demands for justice. The activities of the DSN-UK include international and national advocacy to prohibit discrimination on the basis of caste and cooperation with the Ethical Trading Initiative to prevent human rights violations against Dalits in supply chains.

The Role:

A Campaigning and Communications intern is needed to assist the Director to undertake the following duties:

  1. Communicate with the board, network and invitees on key developments and activities in a timely and
    professional manner;
  2. Assist the Director in implementing the Everyday Casteism campaign strategy and Business and Human
    Rights project;
  3. Support with researching articles and information for the website;
  4. Research into potential new trusts and foundations;
  5. Update the membership database;
  6. Maintain and update the DSN-UK website;
  7. Take minutes for DSN-UK board meetings;
  8. To undertake other tasks as agreed with the Director.

Key skills/experience

  1. excellent attention to detail 
  2. ability to work on own initiative and sometimes unsupervised 
  3. experience in taking formal minutes or notes 
  4. experience of working in an office, including the ability to use e-mail and maintain a website 
  5. ability to work as a member of a very small team. 
  6. ability to work to deadlines
  7. familiarity with social media tools, such as Twitter, and campaign strategies is desirable.


Remuneration and Working Pattern
This post will be offered at the National Living Wage salary of £10.42/hour. The working pattern is hybrid, with normally only 1 day per month in the office.  The hours are flexible, to be agreed upon with the Director.
